Mancunian digging authority Tom Boogizm makes his album debut on the Islington Mill-based Ono imprint with Posh People Make Me Ill. Judging by his mind-bogglingly comprehensive DJ selections on his regular NTS MCR show, it’s no surprise that Posh People Makes Me Ill traverses a myriad of styles, without dwelling in any one for too long, reflecting the artist’s astute musical knowledge and genuine dusty fingers that culminates in a rare piece of bona fide individuality. We’re dropped into his world on the sparse, lo-fi ambience laced drum-machine flex of ‘Answer The Ask’, followed by the jazzy break cut-ups of ‘Numb To It’ and the poignant looped piano keys of ‘E C M’. Getting harder, the pseudo-industrial strut of ‘Punishing’ gives the feel of an cauterised take on SPK, re-calibrated for today’s more progressive dance floors, followed by the more touching guitar blues of ‘Sebokeng’, whilst ‘8Taa!’ stalks the dankest basements with its sully, dub-driven skank. Next up, ‘Platt Bridge Hit Squad’ channels a frantic poly-rhythmic mass normally associated with the new wave of South African dance music into a much groggier affair realigned to Manchester’s perpetual grey skies, rounding off on the contemplative ambient spine-tingler ‘Cod A God’.
