Young Turks regular SBTRKT presents Transitions where the artist explores the instrumental side to his work he has encountered whilst recording for his second LP. On ‘Gamalena’ the artist grafts samples of traditional Balinese gamelan to throbbing bass-heavy rhythms and pulsating hi-hats whilst ‘Hold The Line’ brings a more celestial feel with its intoxicating chimes and skipping drum patterns. ‘Kyoto’ is an involving piece of synth-led electronica, with dramatic chords and huge, plush beats whereas ‘Resolute’ is constructed from bitty electronic fragments and flaunts a more west-coast swagger than its counterpart. ‘Highs & Lows’ is where the producer layers multi-dimensional synth pads and brash stabs over a bubbling undercurrent of mutant bass whereas ‘Stifle’ is a sluggish hip-hop instrumental with loose claps and a downbeat melody.
