White Material affiliates Galcher Lustwerk and Alvin Aronson don their fresh, unassuming Studio OST guise for their debut long player on Lustwerk’s self-titled imprint with Scenes 2012 – 2015. The title suggests a collected of sketched, nondescript material, yet it’s far from the truth, rather part of an overall aesthetic of understatement that underpins the easygoing nature and free flowing groove of their music. The opening analogue crackle and shimmering ambience of ‘Prelude’ sets up the runaway drive of ‘Speed City’ before ‘Above The Waves’ steps on the breaks and slows things down to a more familiar, bumpin’ groove replete with glassy melodic drops. Moving into the middle, ‘ITCZ’ finds its dubbed-out stride amongst a flurry of ambient chords and jittering interference, whilst ‘Unnatural City’ distils everything down to a sensual dose of stripped-bare electro propped by a warm, buoyant bassline. Finally, the pair reveal of their more abstract motives with the future-facing, sci-fi gloss of ‘1 Parsec’, rounding off on the more introspective, Aphex-indebted closer ‘Whitesands’.
