Following last year’s debut album on Transgressive, Glasgow producer Toby Ridler (aka Becoming Real) returns to the label with ‘LOW PEARL’. His electronic compositions have always been tinged with grime and techno, and his sound here is a strange mix of IDM, Burial nightbus ambience and post-dubstep, with a whole range of other flavours thrown into the mix. The gurgling bass of ‘PIANO Ac!d TEST’; the swampy analogue electronics of ‘MINUS’; the low-key house of the title track – all of these speak to Ridler’s range and execution. ‘NIGHT SHADE 1’ would be right at home on Planet Mu, with its wonky rhythms and toybox melodies. After a record’s worth of about-turns and unexpected polyglot delights, ‘MASTER REPLICANT’ closes things out with a slice of deliciously dark techno.
