Veteran Niger guitarist and Tuareg Desert Blues maestro Bombino (aka Omara Moctar) has been a part of the African country’s music scene for well over a decade. In recent years he’s moved from tapes and touring to Western studios, making 2011's Agadez, the buzzed-out garage vibe of 2013's Nomad, (produced by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys) and now Azel, with Dave Longstreth of Dirty Projectors as producer. Longstreth apparently sat back and let Moctar do his righteous thing; loping, hangdog rhythms, achingly sad blues motifs, dustbowl funk, the native Tamashek tradition transposed to the 21C. A master of the guitar given sweet direction by an modern day avant-garde explorer.
