Another three tracker from Hessle Audio following the debut release from Ploy, Bristol-based artist and extraordinary sound manipulator Bruce returns to the label. Steals is his most unconventional release to date, and possibly his best too. The title track has been a staple in sets by Midland and the Hessle crew. It emerges slowly in ripples and teases, as if from some obscure crevasse. The drop – if you can call it that – is seriously audacious, and to say any more would spoil the fun. The second side is even more abstract. ‘Relevant Again’ plays with ideas of distance, pairing far-off booming kicks against rattling milk bottle percussion in the foreground. ‘Petal Pluck’ is sparse and barren, drawing its name from Bruce’s percussive palette. A deeply weird release from an immensely talented artist.
