Soundsystem scholar Om Unit and bass connoisseur Sam Binga team up once again for their third collaborative EP, and second on their shared label BUNIT. 170bpm is the name of the game. The pair are adept at blending influences from across the rave diaspora, and Transpacific is no exception. ‘Windmill Kick’ is an extrodinary fusion of grime and jungle, with rude square wave bass morphing into liturgical synth chords as the breakbeats explode all around. ‘Big Kev’ drops the tempo slightly, while ‘1000 Cats’ nods to Chi-Town footwork and raw ghetto house. After three tracks of frantic drum and bass, ‘Planetary Reboot’ comes as a shock to the system – a beatless noise apocalypse of scraping machinery and terrifying FX. A stunningly well-realised EP.
