Mitchel Van Dinther aka Jameszoo calls his music “naive, computer jazz”, which sums this masterful Brainfeeder debut LP up perfectly and sits neatly alongside the LA label’s catalogue of twisted, modern avant-jazz (see also Kamasi Washington, Thundercat, Teebs). On Fool, Van Dinther is inspired by freaky 70s’ jazz talents like Steve Kuhn, Arthur Verocai, and Robert Wyatt (he even decontextualizes and covers these works), he also teams up with contemporary pianist Niels Broos, drummers Julian Sartorius and Richard Spaven, bass guitarists Raphael Vanoli and Stephen Bruner (aka Thundercat), and saxophonist John Dikeman. A heady brew of twitchy electronics, psychedelic sampling and broken-jazz rhythm patterns.
