Having released on labels such as Black Acre and Idle Hands, Manchester-born Alex Coulton deals in the darker strains of UK bass music. He’s back with his third 12” on Tempa, a hybrid record which mixes house/techno with jungle and dubstep. As we’ve come to expect from Coulton, both tracks are absolute killers. The claustrophobic ‘Ambush’ burrows deep into the rabbit hole, with massive sub-bass detonations and paint-stripping synths. ‘Direction’ is a bit more conventional but no less powerful, draping haunting atmospherics over its techno/2-step frame.
