Having raised his profile with contributions to releases from Liminal Sounds and LuckyMe, Glasgow producer Bushido steps up for his debut solo EP with Astral Black. From the wonderful Pen & Pixel-aping artwork to the music itself, this is pure tropical fire that packs in an impressive number of different styles. ‘Palm Trees’ has been rinsed by the likes of Murlo and Mr. Mitch, combining stripped-down carnival percussion with a Night Slugs palette. ‘Cherry Blossoms’ is a more explicit piece of sino-grime, with rattling drums and juicy Eastern melodies that call to mind Slackk or Samename. ‘Just Us’ is a wonderful hyperactive Mavado-sampling dancehall banger that flips into glossy grime, while ‘Jersey’ is a heavy B’more drum workout with strangely gossamer vocal stabs. Fans of Boxed, Swing Ting or Her Records would be well advised to snap this one up.
