It started with a YouTube kiss. A few years ago, a viral clip of amateur Bangkok musicians entitled ‘MINDBLOWING PSYCHE- DELIA FROM THAILAND’ spread though the blogosphere like wildfire. The band are called Khun Narin’s Electric Phin Band, and they play frantic heavy Psych. Six months after the clip propelled the musicians to recognition, a Los Angeles music producer named Josh Marcy used Facebook and some un- likely interpreters at his local Thai restaurant to get in contact with the band. The music they play is called phin prayuk. he first word refers to the lead instrument, a 3-stringed lute known as the phin. Beer, the phin player, uses a string of Boss effects pedals, including a phaser, distortion and digital delay to get his sound, hit loud through a homemade PA. The results are this startling opus on Innovative Leisure; someway between Konono No.1 and the fringe-land outernational styles of Sublime Frequencies. Heavy.
