Norwich producer Sully (aka Jack Stevens) touches down on Bristol label Black Acre with a bit of a curveball. Gone are the jungle breaks of his last few records – this is a decidedly more measured and introspective offering, although his penchant for shuddering bass is still present and correct. ‘Vamp’ is built around a wonderful yo-yoing vocal sample, and pairs the rhythms of club/ballroom with the spaciousness of early Eski, while the glossy synths of ‘Arco’ make it a perfect fit for the current instrumental grime scene. ‘Bronze’ ups the BPM a bit, although this is obscured somewhat by the skittering drums and eastern sound palette which hark back to the meditative dubstep of Pinch’s ‘Qawwali’.
