UK producer ELWD (pronounced Ellwood) arrives with his third release on Sheffield-based Bad Taste Records. Much like the other two, There’s Light Somewhere is a gently warped beat tape, although it takes on a darker, rain-drenched tone towards the end. The music is smooth as all hell, but ELWD can’t stay still for a moment – his touch is everywhere, and most of these tracks are essentially two beats in one. He has something of J Dilla’s genius ear for arrangement and chopped-up vocal samples – just check how finely everything is diced on Track 2. But this tape is more than just a throwback. It’s got its talons in everything from woozy soul to footwork and chillwave, and comes highly recommended.
