New to Tectonic after a cracking series of releases on the now defunct 50WEAPONS label, Afterglow sees Berlin producer Phon.o throwing himself into the depths of the Bristol sound. ‘Mercurial’ is a slippery head trip somewhere near the intersection of techno and dubstep, with subtle melodies working their way in and out, and a slight footwork tinge. ‘U8 Phunk’ is a lot more direct, with this great metallic percussion, and the bass shifting between gaseous drift and pinpoint accuracy. ‘Bell Blender’ lowers the tempo closer to 130, with a synthesis of grimey synths and dubstep wobble. The background breakbeats are a subtle addition, like an echo of jungle caught in amber.
