New York artist Aaron Maine, aka Porches, releases a new album of expansive and elegant synth pop songs via Domino. Pool is a neon-lit pop record that draws from sleek mainstream house music, electronics-heavy bands like Depeche Mode, and – in its more downtempo moments – somewhat muzak-y soft pop. Whenever a song starts to sound a little straightforward, Maine will take it on a left turn with an unexpected chord change or piece of instrumentation, while his distinctive and emphatic vocal style imbues the record with a huge personality.
