Berlin DJ Daniel Haaksman questions the perception of African music in a globalized world on his new album. Avoiding the sort of clichés of African music that feel like hangovers of the 1970s, the album looks more to the emergent urban African styles that are gaining global traction thanks to platforms like YouTube and Soundcloud for inspiration. It’s a lot of fun, with guest appearances from South African rapper Spoek Mathambo, Sengalese artist Ousme Sembène, Ugandan singer Tshila and more.
