Bloc Party were always the outliers in the post-Franz Ferdinand deluge of angular Gang of Four influenced bands to emerge back in those mid naughties days of Kaiser Chiefs etc… Here, some sixteen years since they formed is their fifth album. Original members have since come and gone, but frontman Kele Okereke remains and his haunted, fragile voice is at the centre of Hymns, touching on lyrics that confront ideas of spirituality and modernity. The music is a pleasing melting pot of taut electronics, innie-disco rhythms, punk-funk bass and chiming guitar lines.
