Mind blowing reissue of Trotro by DJ Katapila, a mixture of Nozinja style Shangaan shake electro and early 90's Kevin Saunderson. Stone cold classic gear right here from the always crucial ATFA, having come across some bootleg cassettes of DJ Katapila while tape digging with Ata Kak, ATFA founder Brian Shimkovitz, we imagine, had the same reaction as we did upon hearing this LP, a mixture of whaaaaat? and wow, this is f*cking incredible!
Having started producing at age 39 on Fruity Loops following years toasting on the mic, Katapila has crafted out a sound completely unique and miles ahead of those around him. Blending elements of classic Chicago and Detroit house a la Inner City and Crystal Waters with the traditional Accra dance music known as Ga he has created an LP that's brimming with as much excitement as it is bonkers (as in the happy hardcore series sense of the word) and following its original release in 2009, Troto has continued to grow in popularity through the mobile DJ scene and bootlegging. DJ Katapila is an active DJ and producer to this day and his bars on Trotro give a message of "energy is for everyone" and mixed with a healthy dose of TR-808 heavy sounds and you have one of the most uplifting and enjoyable albums of recent times and a testament to Awesome Tapes From Africa and the truly awesome sounds they uncover.
Trotro is absolutely next level dance music and possibly the best Awesome Tape yet and comes with the highest recommendation from us and stands as a must check for anyone into Jackmaster, Mumdance or the Gqom Oh! crew.
