This Heat - This Heat
Near-mythical legendary post-punk/art-punk group This Heat's debut album has been finally brought out of cold storage and made available again on deluxe remastered vinyl, produced in collaboration with surviving band members Charles Bullen and Charles Hayward. Recorded between February 1976 and September 1978, This Heat's debut album (sometimes referred to as) Blue/Yellow or 'This Heat' was conceived as an underground classic from the off, at a time when groups were sticking the V's up and throwing down three chords and you have a tune, the trio of Gareth Williams, Charles Bullen and Charles Hayward spent two years perfecting their debut recordings in the group's Brixton based converted storage room studio aptly named cold storage. The sounds found within are almost as difficult as knowing what to call the LP, a heady dose of post-punk, industrial experimentation and improvisation avant-garde but all executed with a sense of funk that resonated from the dub being played out in the groups surroundings. Composed of tape loops, found sounds, and hectic electronics that has gone on to gestate in the minds of those who know and has shown influence across the board from artists like Hot Chip and Caribou to labels such as Blackest Ever Black (who released This Heat member Gareth Williams's Flaming Tunes album on vinyl a few years back) This Heat are the crucial dot connecting the UK industrial movement of groups like Throbbing Gristle and the German new wave of Can and Faust and now forty years after its original release and out of print since then it can finally receive the recognition (and place in many record collections) it truly deserves.
This Heat - Deceit
Near-mythical legendary post-punk/art-punk group This Heat's much considered masterpiece Deceit has been finally brought out of cold storage and made available again on deluxe remastered vinyl, produced in collaboration with surviving band members Charles Bullen and Charles Hayward. Released in 1981 Deceit is a long considered classic of post-punk. Moving from the tape loop experimentation of previous LP into more classical rooted song structures, the group used Deceit as a platform to express anxieties of the time's they were living in, Charles Hayward writes in the linear notes “At the beginning of the ’80s, global events were taking a bad path with the USA defense policy Star Wars against Russia’s Evil Empire and the aptly named Mutually Assured Destruction,” so with this hanging over them they moved towards more song based structures albeit with a tension running through that gave the sounds a unique forward thinking edge. Deceit is known for it's cutting edge studio techniques with the group 'recycling' sounds from previous recordings and dubbing them into new compositions that gave the pre-apocalyptic recordings a disorientating (in the best way possible) feel, Hayward describes his view of Deceit as “a dream within a dream.” and upon hearing this it's hard to argue. The group broke up a year after the release of Deceit and went onto form various groups of cult status from Camberwell Now, Lifetones and Flamign Tunes among them but for anyone with even a passing interest in the obscure, occult and outsider sounds of underground music, Deceit is about as essential a guide book as they come.
This Heat - Health and Efficiency
Near-mythical legendary post-punk/art-punk group This Heat's one and only 12" single has been finally brought out of cold storage and made available again on deluxe remastered vinyl, produced in collaboration with surviving band members Charles Bullen and Charles Hayward. Across the two albums released by the group This Heat managed to sculpt a most singular of sounds, avant-garde, spiky post-punk with an artistic edge all enclosed with an art-dub edge that propelled them to legendary status among those who discovered there music. Health and Efficiency is the twenty minute follow up and bridge of sorts between the debut This Heat and follow up Deceit, across its twenty or so minutes the group found them selves in a groove that sculpted a mix of avant-garde, spiky post-punk and dub with a bit of drone thrown in for balance. The eight minute title track was composed from an improvisation that was part Jah Wobble PiL dub and part Holger Jaki Liebezeit rolling rhythm but executed with a feeling of the finest late night Hannett feel . On the other side Graphic/Varispeed moved into a more eyes down drone subsidiary, a slowly ever evolving loop in the finest looking back glazed over feeling (the track was composed from parts of 24 Track Loop from the debut LP) while the original attention was for this 12" to be able to be listened to at 33, 45 or 78RPM which when you consider this came out in 1980 is a testament to the forward thinking and the tireless innovation of This Heat.
