Strut deliver the goods once again with this new compilation of séga, the traditional music of Mauritius. Born between the 17th and 19th centuries by African slaves, séga was a form of improvised music that provided relief from the inhumane conditions faced in the sugar cane fields. By the mid-1960s, séga had become a symbol of Mauritian pride and started to incorporate aspects of popular musics like funk, soul, and jazz. Soul Sock Séga compiles some of these sounds from the 1970s, selected by DJ duo La Basse Tropicale, who are from the neighbouring island of La Reunion. The compilation includes exstensive sleeve notes from Percy Yip Tong and interviews with original players, archive photos, and original artwork to provide a greater context to the music.
