Andrew Weatherall, the veteran UK producer who also recorded under the guises Two Lone Swordsmen and The Sabres of Paradise (Warp), releases his first proper solo album since 2009’s A Pox On The Pioneers. As per usual it comes via his own label Rotters Golf Club (which continues to be a welcome stage for the output of his long time collaborator Keith Tenniswood as well). Named after the annual festival in Carcassonne which Weatherall curates, Convenanza was co-written by the Sabrettes’ Nina Walsh – a result of an impromptu, unplanned session together in the studio. The album reflects this spontaneity as much as the musical innovator’s multi-faceted artistic background, moving from funk-infused post punk (‘Frankfurt Advice’) to sci fi house with deep subs (‘All That’s Left’) and twinkling leftfield vocal chorusses (‘We Count The Stars’), with a brawling trumpet as their linking element.
