Nils Frahm's Screws was an excellent lesson in how to compose subtle and delicate modern composition while carrying the weight of loss, in this case the loss was from the use of his thumb as he broke it falling off a bunk bed in his studio meaning the original LP was composed with only the use of eight functioning fingers and one thumb. Three years later and he is revisiting this passage of time with Screws Reworked, but much like the original LP this remix album has been composed not in your average way, instead of any big name producers or associates Nils has enlisted nine fans from around the globe to rework his original compositions and the result despite being detached within its parameters of influence flows together with all the tightness of its subject material. This is the sounds of nine hugely talented producers composing music not for commercial viability but just for the love of sound. Listening through you could be mistaken for believing the reworks are by Nils himself but under different pseudonyms but that goes to show the breadth of influence his music has over his audience. The music ranges from soaring classical-rooted passages to after-hours atmospheres and Computer Controlled Pt. 2 leaning structures to reverb-drenched ambient house, for fans of old the entire LP will take you buy surprise while newcomers will have much to discover. Screws Reworked is sure to be one of the quietest highlights of 2015 without a doubt.
