Modern classical label Nonclassical issue a new album from composer-pianist Leon Michener, aka Klavikon. Michener uses the prepared piano as his instrument, using it in unique ways to create haunting textures and techno-infused rhythms. All 14 of the album’s tracks were performed in real time without any loops or overdubs, meaning that every sound – as hard as it is to believe – comes from the piano. Michener reimagines the textures of electronic music through a conventional process by adding objects to the piano (stone, wood, platic, metal) and amplifying them: as such, the deep sub basses come from credit cards, the kickdrums from rubber wedges.
