London-based producer talent Murlo returns with a colourful statement: his second release on Dre Skull’s Mixpak in 2015 following the Jasmine EP, the eight-track mini album Odyssey is an all instrumental affair that once again showcases what constitutes his idiosyncratic signature style, gumming up elements of grime, baseline house, new r’n’b and dancehall. Rarely has anyone told stories using synths in such a compelling way as Murlo: from the blissful harps dovetailing with the vocal keys on the lead track ‘Moodswung’ to the angular arpeggios of ‘Cascade’ entering a hypnotic trance and the subs- and rhythm-focussed ‘Furnace’: each song narrates a tale in its own right and never ceases to keep us in suspense.
