Africa Seven compile an extensive retrospective of influential Cameroonian musician André-Marie Tala, AKA Tala AM with African Funk Experimentals. After loosing both his parents and his sight before the age of 16, Tala committed the rest of his life to crafting some of the funkiest, most upbeat afro-beat grooves you’re ever likely to encounter. The centre point of this essential collection is undoubtedly the sweltering wah-wah funk of ‘Hot Koki’ - a piece notoriously plagiarized by none other than James Brown on with ‘Fever’. From here, the collection focuses on a range of equally infections pieces, such as the upbeat, highlife vibes of ‘Nom Ta Me’, the joyous disco stomp of ‘Gotom’ or the galvanizing rhythm guitar lines of 1978 classic ‘Black Woman’. With most of the focus of late being on the works of Francis Bebey, this collection shines the light on another entirely different yet no less interesting faucet of music from Cameroon.
