Perfectly frozen in time, Gearbox have done the world a justice with this near-perfect session from the Velvet Underground's icy Nico. Originally recorded for John Peel in 1971 and only previously available commercially in 88, these recordings come from Nico at her most creative peak, fresh from recording the hauntingly beautiful The Marble Index and Desertshore albums. Using only her voice and an indian harmonium these sirens of sadness slowly fall out of the speakers like falling rain. There is not really much to say about this release, the simplicity of it shows a breathtaking beauty that was more wallowing in a proto-post-punk shadow on the Marble Index. Nico described this music in the most perfect way imaginable ‘the kind of music that can be heard when there is a storm outside,' and listening to it, what more can you say to that?
