Texan trio Khruangbin take inspiration from exotica, Thai funk, psychedelia, and surf on their debut album The Universe Smiles Upon You, issued by Late Night Tales offshoot Night Time Stories. It’s a supremely relaxed listen from a group of musicians who synchronise with one another perfectly, coming across like a cross between the noirish vibe of The Shadows and the easy cool of Curtis Mayfield. While the album is mostly instrumental, occasional vocal chants crack through the mix.
