Fat Cat Records’ established post-classical 130701 sub-label presents a stunning debut release from French pianist and composer Elilie Levienaise Farrouch with LP Like Water Through The Sand. It’s a powerful, elegant and profound works that utilises piano, string quartets and subtle electronics to create truly refined classical material augmented for today’s modern environment. Here, we’re afforded gracious piano solos on ‘The Sum Of Our Flaws’ and the more vulnerable ‘Hands Closed Together’, whilst ‘Cotidal Lines’ and ‘Minnesang’ focus more on the weeping grace of the string quartet (performed by the respected London Contemporary Orchestra). Elsewhere, Farrouch puts her deft sound design talents into play, such as on the stark melancholia of ‘Persephone’ or the wide-eyed, minimalistic closing piece ‘Strelka’. A discerning debut, highly recommended for fans of Nils Frahm and Max Richter, in addition to Valgeir Sigurðsson and his Bedroom Community collective.
