As far as holy grails go, James Stinson’s debut 1991 Hyperspace Sound Lab EP occupies true mythical status for many record collectors, due to its eye-watering rarity and the fact that it predates the sadly departed artist’s seminal and genre defining electro work with Gerald Donald as part of Detroit originals Drexciya. Here we see a visionary artist working in the moment with true originality, merging a tight, snapping groove and glistening synth strings to liquid rhyming on ‘Clarence G’s Club’, followed by the delay-riddled drums and dramatic stabs ‘Data Transfer’, which must make for one of the most perfect opening tracks. Flipside, ‘Cause I Said It Right’ switches back to minimal drum machine beats laced with hip-hop vocals, whilst heads-down classic ‘Turbine’ turns up the funk. Praise to Clone for getting this piece of Electronic music history back out to the masses.
