Following 2013’s brilliantly arresting Impersonator, Devon Welsh and Matthew Otto return to Matador for this equally affecting long-player. As with most of their material, themes of loneliness and isolation dominate. The stark production style leaves the vocals room to really reverberate which gives a real gravitas to the lyrics. Silver Car Crash plays out like a miniature opera while Downtown is perhaps the best vocal performance Welsh has ever committed to record. Are You Alone? affirms the duo’s status as one of contemporary music’s boldest and brightest forces. Another stirring libretto.
