Asperities is the fourth solo album by Canadian cellist Julia Kent. For this LP, Kent looked to themes surrounding conflict – from introspective inner-torment to disruption and an international and global level. This climate of discord is an engaging blueprint for a record built from the cello. Kent exercises a strong handle on traction and tension through her compositions. From the opening throbs of Hellebore to the tumultuous disarray of Terrain, the music never loses that pinpoint-sharp thematic focus which makes it so engrossing.
