Mark T. Smith (Explosions In The Sky) and Matthew Cooper (Eluvium) release a new EP under their collaborative project Inventions. Where their past collaborations melded Smith’s sublime and euphoric post-rock compositions with Cooper’s predilection for introspective ambience in a fairly straightforward manner, the Blanket Waves EP continues to smudge each artist’s thumbprints to build something that's more than the sum of its parts. Both ‘Blanket Waves’ and ‘Hearing Loss’ are 12-minute epics with a tight compositional focus, where wandering, beatless instrumental passages slowly and subtly give way to swelling, cathartic songwriting.
