Greek artist Larry Gus releases his second album for DFA. I Need New Eyes (the title was inspired by a Marcel Proust misquotation) sees Larry Gus shed the intricate patchwork of samples and psychedelia that defined his earlier records and instead take on a more considered approach to songwriting, vocals, and instrumentation. Musically Larry Gus draws from a broad range of styles, from African rhythms and hip hop beatmaking to new wave and funk, while lyrically he explores his own neuroses and anxieties. The result comes across like a more contemporary update of pop eccentrics like David Byrne or Thomas Dolby.
