Dutch duo Weval, comprised of Harm Coolen and Merijn Scholte Albers, follow up their 2014 Kompakt debut with this powerful two-sided single, fusing their love of jazz, house and trip hop to their very own, idiosyncratic style. On ‘It’ll Be Just Fine’, the producers draw attention to the broken beat by using analogue percussion sounds, the sparse keys fading from the spotlight. Although this overall chunky sound aesthetic is reflected on ‘Grow Up’, they opt for a house beat here, shifting the focus of the story to a programmatic bass pattern, correlating chords and ephemeral vocal traces.
