Taken from a single recording session from the summer of 1964, Spiritual Unity is the freeform and incredibly pioneering full-length from American saxophonist Albert Ayler. As well being a landmark release for celebrated New York City imprint ESP-Disk – the record was produced by label founder Bernard Stollman – Spiritual Unity features two versions of Ayler’s seminal Ghosts composition. The freeform nature of Ayler’s work on this LP created a blueprint for polyrhythmic jazz which is at once improvisational but unmistakably considered. No surprise that The Penguin Guide To Jazz included this record as part of its “Core Collection”.
