They don’t come much more historical than this with original imprint Flying Dutchman reissuing seminal American musician, author and spoken word activist Gil Scott Heron’s 1970 debut LP Small Talk At 125th Lenox. The piece features Scott-Heron’s captivating, spoken word passages over a simple, rhythmic percussion background, yet the precise delivery of the words produce the biggest impact. Such as the famous ‘The Revolution Will Not Be Televised’ – apiece etched into musical history for eternity, or ‘Paint It Black’, where the artist laments of the racial discrepancies in the Northern and Southern hemispheres. Whilst Scott-Heron would go on to continue to make incredible music right up until his death in 2011, Small Talk At 125th captures his raw, poetic and unique talent in its purest form.
