Despite being a prevalent player on the Brooklyn alt-pop scene, as a member of Brooklyn's eccentric art-rock quartet Celestial Shore, rising in the wake of Dirty Projectors and Vampire Weekend, Lorely Rodriguez announces her debut solo album -in a surprise drop- five years after she first appeared. Moulded by the same styles and influences as contemporaries Phantogram, Grimes, and Purity Ring, Empress of Me finds Rodriquez draw confident shapes in all manner of genres. From the slow-jam R&B of “Standard” to the bubbling house rhythms of “Water Water”, and the agit-syth pop of “Kitty Kat”, Me is a powerful record underpinned by frank and honest writing, and in the disco-euphoria of “Threat” she proves Empress of Me is no introspective bedroom project.
