Dubstep has undergone a renaissance in the US, with DJs and producers shunning high octane EDM flavours and reconnecting with the darker, more underground feel of the genre’s earliest days. On his Dead Language EP for Distance’s Chestplate label, Los Angeles producer Mesck channels the Croydon spirit to create a set of murky, pitch black bass belters. But Mesck isn’t some old school revivalist – echoes of the LA beat scene’s wonky rhythms can be heard in his beat construction, giving the sounds on here a distinctive character.
