Hailing from Utrecht, experimental drummer Jelle Buma fuses his live practice with electronics for his Sweach EP on Studio Wannsee’s label M=Maximal. He disguises his work under a certain ferocity — when it’s in fact the kind of complexity you’d find in math rock pieces: Buma’s ideas are so centred around rhythm that the seemingly chaotic falls into place again and again. Enriched by scruffy guitars and heavy, nasal synths, his dynamic and precise drumming is emphasised in the production, conjuring up diverse textures, from the delicate, swift cymbals of ’Suderein’ to the accentuated full kit approach of the title track.
