After a couple of white label releases from Ishmael and Laurence Guy, London party-cum-label Church returns to the regular catalogue numbers with their second outing from Leeds producer Viers: Freesia is the techno artist’s first full-length, seeing him further elaborate on his raw, low-key style. Viers gently eases us into his intimate realm of sounds, inviting us to ‘Enter’ over rainy Rauschen and sparse percussion full of anticipation. It’s a dark world, but not an aggressive one: softly shuffling rhythms and ambient keys of ‘Finding Work’, even the heavier footed subs of ‘Jiro’ and its rattling metal drum work or the neurotic pattern of ‘Haruka’ are a pleasant experience, mostly owed to Viers’ great sense of dynamics: he injects his overdrive and low pass filter carefully and in small doses, to sustainable effects.
