The music of US-born, Osaka-based producer Erik Luebs, aka Magical Mistakes, has graced labels like King Deluxe, Civil Music, and his own Perfect Touch imprint. With his Cracks In The Surface EP, Luebs finds a home on Obey City’s Astro Nautico imprint. Luebs’ geographical dislocation allows him to tear through regional genre boundaries without fear, and so the EP covers everything from instrumental hip hop to contemporary club music to sweeping post-rock to electronic pop. For every club rattler like ‘Unkempt’ there’s a leftfield pop song like ‘Desire’ or an expressive number like title track ‘Cracks In The Surface’.
