Volume 3 in the Heavenly Sweetness (Parisian label founded by Franck Descollonges and Antoine Rajon) Èthiopiques curated series Ethiopian Urban Modern Music that started in 2007 and now arrives down on sparkling black vinyl for the heads in 2015. Regular fixture Samuel Belay and –his tremulous vocal- star on the damn-funky ‘Qèrèsh Endèwaza’ whilst the organ-fuzz driven blues of ‘Ené Nègn Bay Manesh’ by Girma Bèyènè would sound just perfect as the OST on a Ethiopian remake of Scorsese’s Casino. Gétatchèw Mèkurya’s ‘Gèdamay’ (from Ethiopiques Volume 14) wraps up the comp in a flourish of saxophone virtuosity.
