Angel Deradoorian is best known as a former bassist and vocalist with Dirty Projectors, but she’s had a busy career of her own for a long time. Besides releasing a solo EP in 2009, she’s also worked as a guest vocalist (notably on Flying Lotus’s ‘Siren Song’) and played as a member of Avey Tare’s Slasher Flicks. The Expanding Flower Planet is Deradoorian’s debut album as a solo artist and is informed by outward-looking, spiritual ideas about the human consciousness. Inspirations include the minimalism of Terry Riley, the divine craft of Alice Coltrane, and the driven grooves of Can, but what shines through the most is Deradoorian’s own vivid, adventurous writing and gorgeous harmonies.
