Although we should be used to the consistent quality of Applebim’s releases by now, his most recent work for London’s Tempa doesn’t cease to wow us all over again. A vital component of the Bristol scene for years, the producer strikes the balance between hypnotic and progressive, as showcased accordingly on Avebury’s opener, the only beat-based track of the EP: its patiently evolving pattern works towards its climax with prominent hi-hats, when the dumpy bass gets the big moment it’s been waiting for throughout the first half. The beatless ‘Auburn Blaze’ reveals its rhythmic qualities through movements in texture that splashes of low frequencies pierce into — it reads as a prologue to the imaginative world of ‘Wandered’, a noisy fantasy land of aquatic sequences, luring us into its depths.
