Syntoma was founded by Alex Eisenring in the 1980s. Inspired by the ethos of progressive, freeform jazz, Syntoma existed at the centre of Mexico’s strange immeasurable underground subculture of that era. At the time of these recordings, Syntoma was a trio creating the kind of instrumental mini-opuses that you can find on the earlier tracks as well as detached vocal performances which play with warped harmonies and fragmented melodies. The culture that surrounded Syntoma remains largely undocumented but the streaks of British post-punk and off-centre pop which are wrapped up in these cuts shows a tangible legacy.
