Released in 1988 on legendary stable Factory Records, Substance is a singles compilation chronicling the incredible run of off-centre post-punk records Joy Division had before their time was cut short. With standalone singles like Love Will Tear Us Apart alongside chilling B-Sides like She’s Lost Control- the posthumus release of this collection in relation to Curtis’ death makes it all the more touching. The record closes out on a version of their biggest hit referred to as the Pennine version as they recorded it live at Pennine Studios in Oldham. The rendition is thrillingly unpolished- an embodiment of their entire catalogue.
