One of the late MF DOOM’s essential releases celebrates its 20th anniversary: with albums dropping left and right during his highly prolific era of 2003 to 2005, MM..FOOD sits in between his aliases King Geedorah and Viktor Vaughn, and collaborations with Danger Mouse, MF Grimm, and the legendary Madvillainy project with Madlib. Parsing through all this greatness could be a mouthful when just a handful of months separated most of these records, but twenty years later, MM..FOOD remains an unmissable feast in DOOM’s discography. With his infamous appetite as a jumping off point, DOOM crafted one of rap’s finest (and earliest) concept albums about the very real joy in eating good.

This being DOOM, there are layers upon layers of in-jokes and wry wit both gloomy and silly to take you off the path, but the truth is in his rhymes. Unlikely hip-hop anthems were formed from tracks like ‘Rapp Snitch Knishes’ and ‘Deep Fried Frenz’, pairing hall of fame crate-digging with dextrous, off-beat flows, while others like ‘One Beer’ made holy grails of the records they sampled (like, say, the excellent French band Cortex).

The deft, joyous sampling, the impish humour and hypercreative wordplay, the superhero narrative mystique: these are known quantities when we talk DOOM, his calling cards all used to the fullest effect. Yet what’s most striking two decades on from MM..FOOD is the sound. Warmly nostalgic and rough around the edges, the album feels as worn in as the sweatpants you wear after a feast. Whether it’s a first time listen or a timely revisit, MF DOOM’s almost universal appeal only gets stronger as the years go by. It’s never a bad time for some MM..FOOD.
