Inspired by a daydream, Squarepusher’s 2008 LP Just A Souvenir moves into improvisational, future jazz territory with both live instrumentation and electronic production working in perfect harmony. Opening up is ‘Star Time 2’, a catchy piece that centres on a playful synth melody followed by the funky bass in ‘The Coathanger’ and ‘Open Society’ where Jenkinson demonstrates his deft guitar play. Things get grungier on ‘Planet Gear’ where wailing guitar chords are layered over drum fills and heavily processed bass slaps whereas ‘Duotone Moonbeam’ covers jazzier ground with its electrified bass guitar play.
