Detroit veteran John Beltran returns to Delsin with another collection of serene, atmospheric ambient and modern classic material on the Espais LP. Throughout his career Beltran has refined his melodic, ambient-laced techno sound, with early landmark releases on R&S and Peacefrog, yet stylistically, Espais follows in the same vein as 2013 LP Amazing Things, with emphasis placed on a emotionally wrought, cinematic sound, inspired by the likes of Vangelis and Max Richer. The bubbling notes and sustained strings of ‘Intro’ set the dramatic feel, followed piano chords buried under a heavy drone on the title cut and airy, cleansing tones on ‘Prestvka’. ‘Love Suspended’ is another yearningly beautiful piece that captures the delicate nature of the piano with its minimalistic strikes, yet ‘Raume’ explores the opposite end of the spectrum with its industrial clangs gradually degrading into one of the most arresting and vivid moments of the release. Steeped in narrative, Espais demonstrates Beltran’s astute talent at utilising a range of sonic textures to create a singular aural story.
