‘Outside The Line’ is the first release on Debruit’s new ‘multi disciplinary structure’ ICI. A follow up to 2012’s ‘From The Horizon’ (Civil Music) and 2013’s ‘Aljawal’ (a collaboration with vocalist Alsarah on Soundway Records), the record continues his exploration of the sounds and rhythms of Africa. Whilst the highlife-meets-beats approach of his debut was aimed squarely at the clubs this is a more cerebral affair. As the producer states himself he 'wanted to make some cold sounding African music, from an imaginary place where ancient West Africa cohabits with 80's New York’. That description couldn’t be more apt; the influences of Ghana and Senegal are to the fore, but there is also a nod to the experimental synth work of Vangelis and the more minimal elements of early house music. A definite progression from his previous work, this is an album that offers rich rewards with repeat listens.
